Ex-rebel slain, another missing in Samar ambush

From the Philippine Daily Inquirer (Nov 19, 2019): Ex-rebel slain, another missing in Samar ambush

TACLOBAN CITY –– A former member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed while another was missing after their former comrades allegedly ambushed them in a remote village in Matuguinao town, Samar province on Monday.

Killed during the ambush in Barangay Inubod was Dennis Diaz, while his cousin, Carlos Diaz, remained missing, said town Mayor Aran Boller in a phone interview.

Boller quoted the police as saying the victims, together with their three companions, were on their way home to Barangay Nagpapacao about 3 p.m. when around 30 NPA members ambushed them.

According to Boller, Dennis died on the spot. His cousin remained missing, while their three companions escaped.

He said the victims were former rebels who surrendered to him last year.

The Philippine Army had identified Matuguinao as one of the areas in Samar with a strong rebel presence.
