All 3-star generals worthy as next AFP chief:

From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 13, 2019): All 3-star generals worthy as next AFP chief: Madrigal

AFP chief-of-staff Gen. Benjamin Madrigal, Jr.,

All incumbent three star generals in the military are qualified for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)'s top post, its current chief said Wednesday.

"All three star generals are qualified for the position," AFP chief-of-staff Gen. Benjamin Madrigal, Jr., told reporters when asked on whether he has recommended anyone as the next AFP chief.

Madrigal will mandatorily retire from the service upon turning 56 on September 28.

Currently, there are 13 active three-star generals in the AFP and these include Army commander Lt. Gen. Macairog Alberto, Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Rozzano Briguez and Navy flag-officer-in-command Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad.

Also, Madrigal said the selection of the next AFP chief is the prerogative of President Rodrigo R. Duterte to select the next AFP chief.

"It is not for me to recommend the next (AFP chief-of-staff), (it is up to the) President (to select), but of course, he (the next AFP chief) should be adept on the (all the security) campaigns we are conducting. He must be familiar with the National Task Force (to End Local Communist Armed Conflict), the problem with the communist insurgency and the peace process with the Bangsamoro Region, and of course, also adept without other security challenges," he said in Filipino.

Madrigal took over the helm of the AFP on December 11, 2018, replacing retired general and now Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Carlito Galvez.

He is a member of Philippine Military Academy Class of 1985.
