From Politiko Mindanao (Aug 30, 2019): Ex-MILF fighters to be deployed as members of peacekeeping team in Bangsamoro region
A total of 219 former Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) combatants have completed a month-long basic military training and are now ready to be deployed as members of the peacekeeping team in the Bangsamoro region, an official said.
According to Maj. Gen. Diodado Carreon, 6th Infantry Division chief and head of the Joint Task Force Central (JTFC), the former members of the MILF-Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF) would be deployed and become part of the Joint Peace and Security Team of the Bangsamoro region.
“I put emphasis on the values as to how this could help you relearn the basics and assess yourselves both in terms of knowledge, concepts, and application of combat skills,” he said during the graduation ceremony held at the headquarters of the 602nd Infantry Brigade in Camp Lucero, Barangay Nasapian, Carmen, North Cotabato Tuesday, August 27.
“Joint Task Force Central and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as a whole, are glad that we will be working with you in pursuit of lasting peace and sustainable development in Central Mindanao,” he added.
The training of the former MILF fighters was part of the peace agreement between the government and the MILF.
The former combatants were equipped to become competent peacekeeping forces prior to their deployment in the six identified MILF camps on September 7.
They will form part of the team composed of the AFP, Philippine National Police, and MILF-BIAF.
