CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao -- The chief of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division (6ID) here honored two soldiers injured in a recent explosion of an improvised bomb in Maguindanao.

During a brief visit inside the camp infirmary here Thursday, Major Gen. Diosdado Carreon, 6ID commander and head of Joint Task Force Central, pinned Wounded Personnel Medals (WPMs) to Sgt. Archie Dema-ala and Pfc. Narciso Monreal, both of the Army’s 57th Infantry Battalion based in Datu Saudi Ampatuan in this province.

They were injured when a powerful roadside bomb went off in Barangay Bakat, Rajah Buayan, Maguindanao on August 20 while they were conducting a foot patrol operation against outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF).

Carreon told the wounded soldiers that the pinning of WPMs on them was in recognition of their bravery and commitment to protecting the people from enemies of the state.

Carreon said they are not letting their guards down against the BIFF that has vowed to attack and sow chaos in both military installations and civilian communities in the province.

“We are always ready for them (BIFF) and they know that,” he said.

On Aug. 5, the 6ID launched air and ground assaults on pinpointed lairs of the BIFF in the vast Liguasan Marsh of the province following reports of a gathering of extremist factions in the area.

Fifteen BIFF radicals and a government trooper were killed in the two-week running gun battles that ensued.
