MANILA, Philippines – Former Navy intelligence officer Manuel Cabochan is a virtual unknown compared to his Philippine Military Academy (PMA) classmates and fellow Magdalo leaders, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and Representative Gary Alejano.

Since the 2003 Oakwood mutiny, Cabochan has been content working behind the scenes. He’s the incumbent vice chairman of the Magdalo’s executive committee and president of the Magdalo para sa Pagbabago, the group’s socio-political movement.

But Cabochan is now the lone Magdalo member holding an elective post in a Congress dominated by President Rodrigo Duterte’s allies. Trillanes completed his term as senator and Alejano failed to get a Senate seat along with the rest of the Otso Diretso slate.

Cabochan knows he has his work cut out for him, but vows to pick up where Trillanes and Alejano had left off.

Rappler contributor Nikko Dizon talks to Cabochan about his new role and why he thinks the Magdalo remains relevant nearly 20 years since the Oakwood mutiny.
