President Rodrigo Duterte declared June 5 as regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eid’l Fitr (fest of Ramadan).

Proclamation 729 issued on Thursday, May 28, 2019, put the nation on holiday to give opportunity for the entire Filipino people to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in peace and harmony in observance and celebration of the Eid’l Fitr, one of the two major holidays in the Muslim world.

The proclamation also stated, “Whereas, in order to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness, it is necessary to declare Wednesday, 05 June 2019, a regular holiday throughout the country.

Eid’l Fitr marks the end of the month-long fasting of Muslims in the holy month of Ramadan.

Islam mandates every able-bodied Muslim to fast by abstaining from eating, drinking and engaging in sexual acts from the break of dawn till sunset.

Fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam.

Muslims are also encouraged to devote more time on meditation, prayer and reading the holy Qur’an during Ramadan.

On the 29th day of Ramadan which falls on June 3, designated Ulama in various parts of the country will do moon-sighting.

Once the crescent will be visible, the Darul Ifta shall declare Tuesday, 4th of June, as the Eid’l Fitr.
