295 NPA members surrender in Gigaquit town

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte -- A total of 295 members and supporters of the Communist Party of the Philippines - New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) voluntarily surrendered to the Community Support Program (CSP) teams under 30th Infantry “Python” Battalion (30IB), 4th Infantry Division, Philippine Army at around 11:00 o’clock in the morning on February 15, 2019 at Barangay Camam-onan, Gigaquit town.

Among the surrenderers were 28 Militia ng Bayan (MB) and 267 Underground Mass Organization (UGMO) members who also yielded seven assorted firearms to Gigaquit mayor Elvira Egay and 30IB battalion commander Lt. Col. Allen Raymund Tomas.


The surrenderers pledged their oath of allegiance to the government followed by the declaration of the CPP-NPA as “Persona non Grata” headed by Inday Flor B. Bangga, barangay chairperson of Camam-onan.

Barangay Camam-onan was among the barangays declared as conflict-affected areas (Con-AAs) in the province which was also among the barangays declared as Peace and Development Zone (PDZ) that was launched on August 28, 2018.

In his message, Tomas said the LASICAM Complex (Lahi,Sico-Sico, Camam-onan) were identified as stronghold of the CPP-NPA for the past decades but due to the conduct of Community Support Program (CSP) activities and the entry of government projects and interventions, they were able to address issues, regain the trust and support of the masses.

Meanwhile, Brigadier General Franco Nemesio M Gacal, commander of 4ID commend Tomas and his troop, together with the officials of the local government unit of Gigaquit, for the big accomplishment.

“Indeed, peace and development is multi-dimensional that requires a whole-of-nation approach in order to effectively address perennial problems of the communities particularly in Con-AAs,” Gacal said. (Lt. Ken Enciso, CMO-30IB, Philippine Army/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
