The Task Force Davao (TFD) and the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) have tightened security measures in the city following the recovery of an Improvise Explosive Device (IED) along the roadside of Barangay Alejandra Navarro (Lasang) on Thursday morning.

City Police Office director Sr. Supt. Alexander Tagum told TIMES yesterday that the recovery of IED indicates two obvious points: the terrorists are “indeed” planning to initiate criminal intent in the city and that the security measures imposed in the city are highly effective against the terrorist plans.

“This further proves that all security forces based in the city should not relax their guard,” Tagum said. “Or else the terrorists will strike terror in our beloved City.”

“Also we need the support of the vigilant residents of this city for us to fight this common social problem,” he added.

Col. Nolasco Mempin, TFD commander, said they have yet to determine the real intent of the IED there.

“The IED has similarity with the IED used by NPA in their landmining and terroristic acts,” Mempin said.

“We could not speculate the intent but our AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) are always on guard and high alert against the continued terroristic activities of the NPA,” he added.

The IED was recovered early Thursday morning by TFD personnel along the national highway near a pedestrian foot bridge in the busy poblacion of Barangay Alejandra Navarro (Lasang), Bunawan District.

The area is just around 50 meters away from the Lasang Footbridge and 1.2 kilometers away from the TFD checkpoint in Sitio Licanan.

The EID — revealed to be an improvised hand grenade — was made of PVC pipe, detonating cord, blasting cap and ammonium nitrate fuel oil (fertilizer mixed with diesel fuel).
