CAMP GEN EMILIO AGUINALDO, Quezon City (DWDD) – With the official declaration by the Department of National Defense for the termination of all combat operations in Marawi City, the Armed Forces of the Philippines is now shifting its focus on the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the city.

According to AFP spokesperson MGen Restituto Padilla, all operational aspect of combat operations will cease, although he explained that from time to time gunfire may be heard in the combat environment as a precaution or requirement of troops conducting clearing operations in every corner of the main battle area.

The military is still conducting Engineering operations; Clearing operations; Mopping operations, specially from booby traps, Improvised Explosive Devices, and unexploded ordnances; the conduct of Civil-Military operations, and the like, to pave the way for a safe and secured return to Marawi of its residents.

Gen Padilla also confirmed that the total number of cadavers recovered from the final encounter was 42, although it was in different areas of the two-storey building, the mosque, and in the immediate vicinity. A big gun emplacement was also discovered in the structure. Most of the cadavers recovered around the structures were from Maute fighters who were trying to escape. It can be recalled that Maute leaders Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute were also trying to escape the day they were neutralized by the combined elite troops from the AFP and PNP and armored units.
