Four construction workers arrested on the eve of National Day have been charged at the Sessions Court over their ties to the Abu Sayyaf militant group.

Hajar Abdul Mubin, 25, was accused of being a member of the Abu Sayyaf group since 2010, and charged under Section 130KA of the Penal Code on Monday. 

He was accused together with Ahmad Omar, 52, Jaffar Ahmad, 26, and Philippine national Abdul Syamir Dabilin, 25, who were charged with intentional omission of information regarding a terrorist act — an offence under Section 130M.

Hajar, also known as Abu Asrie, is believed to be a member of the Jolo-based Lucky 9 kidnap-for-ransom group with links to the Abu Sayyaf based in the jungles of Jolo and Basilan islands. 

According to the charge sheet, all four lived in the same flat in Taman Desa Baiduri, in Cheras.

They were all arrested on Aug 30.

The four, who were not represented, confirmed they understood the charges which were read in Malay.

Crimes under Section 130KA are punishable with life imprisonment and a fine, while offences under Section 130M are punishable with up to seven years prison, a fine or both.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Noorhafizan Zakaria offered no bail as the accused were arrested under the Special Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012.

Judge Surita Budin fixed Oct 16 for next mention to transfer the case to the High Court.
