From the Philippine News Agency (May 24): Military, police secure Northern Mindanao
Military and police forces have secured the boundaries in Northern Mindanao to prevent the possible escalation of hostilities in Marawi City to its neighboring areas, a top military official said Wednesday.
Maj. Gen. Benjamin Madrigal, Jr., commander of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division (ID), said that the military and the regional police command in Northern Mindanao have beefed up security in the borders of Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon provinces.
The police and the military have also reinforced the checkpoints in the boundaries of Luga-it in Misamis Oriental and Iligan City in Lanao Del Norte, Madrigal said.
He said that while the 4ID has enough troops, the "sending of reinforcement to Marawi City is not necessary at the moment."
Madrigal also said that the military is still waiting for the implementing guidelines after President Rodrigo Duterte, who was in Russia, declared martial law in the entire island of Mindanao Tuesday night, hours after government troops and members of the Maute terror group clashed in Marawi City.
