Army hits Karapatan's 'baseless accusations'

From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 11):  Army hits Karapatan's 'baseless accusations'

The 10th Infantry (Agila) Division of the Philippine Army condemned Tuesday the "unfounded allegations" hurled by militant group Karapatan against soldiers, who they accused of killing farmers and leaders in the area.

In a statement, Capt. Alexander Cabales, acting chief of the 10th Infantry Division's Public Affairs Office, said the accusations are "unfair" since there were no evidence presented or formal charges filed in the proper forum.

He urged Karapatan to submit the necessary evidence to the Philippine National Police (PNP) so that charges will be filed against those responsible for the killings.

The leadership of the 10th ID will welcome and support any probe to determine the truth behind the allegations, he added.

He also clarified that the 10th ID “does not condone any misbehavior or abuses of its members and will be very grateful to those who will help us purge our ranks of misfits and abusive members.”

Cabales said Karapatan's failure to press charges “only confirms the notion that the group's existence is to support the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the New People’s Army.

Karapatan has tagged the Army in the Davao region in the killings of couple Ramon and Leonila Pesadilla in Compostela town, the couple Arlene and Arman Alcominar and Cora Lina in Laak, Pedro Pandagay in Mabini, and Danilo Nadal and Edwin Catog in Pantukan, all in Compostela Valley province, and Elias Pureza in San Isidro, Davao del Norte.

Cabales said the PNP is still investigating those incidents.

  1. KARAPATAN (Alliance for the Advancement of People's Rights) is the main Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) human rights umbrella front organization with chapters active throughout the Philippines.

KARAPATAN's unfounded but relentless anti-military propaganda is a constant irritant that must be dealt with by Philippine military units at all levels.
