From the Mindanao Examiner (Dec 15): Rebels raid military posts in Philippines
Rebels attacked an army base and a detachment in the restive province of Maguindanao in the Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines, sparking clashes that left at least 3 people dead, officials said.
Officials said members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters raided Thursday evening the base of the 19th Infantry Battalion in the village called Bagan in Guindulungan town and another detachment of the 1st Mechanized Battalion in Timbangan village in Shariff Aguak town.
Two rebels and a civilian were killed in the clashes. No military casualties had been reported by security officials.
It was not immediately known what triggered the twin attacks in the province, but a senior BIFF leader was killed recently inside his house and the rebel group blamed the military for targeting one of its commanders tagged as behind the spate of ambuscades on security forces in the region.
Many of the BIFF members were former fighters of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front which signed an interim peace deal with Manila in 2014.
