From the Philippine News Agency (Dec 8): New AFP chief supports fight vs illegal drugs
Newly appointed Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief-of-staff Lt. Gen. Eduardo Eduardo Año said the military will continue supporting police in the campaign against illegal drugs.
"In line with the President (Rodrigo Duterte)'s call to protect the future generations of Filipinos, the AFP shall extend all necessary military capabilities to support the lead of the Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies in bringing down drug syndicates and eradicating illegal drugs," he said.
Año took over from Philippine Military Academy Class of 1983 classmate Gen. Ricardo Visaya who retired on Dec. 7 after 37 years of military service.
He said the entire military hierarchy remains committed to support the various national development programs which includes environmental protection, preservation of natural resources, peace and development.
Año will serve as the AFP chief until he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 56 on Oct. 26, 2017.
He served as Intelligence Service, Armed Forces of the Philippines from 2012 to 2014 before becoming commander of the Compostela Valley-based 10th Infantry Division.
Año was also credited with the capture of Communist Party of the Philippines chair Benito Tiamzon and wife Wilma in Alonguisan, Cebu last March 22, 2014.
He was also responsible for the killing of rebel commander Leonardo Pitao alias Kumander Parago in June 28, 2015.
