With just seven days away before the formal opening of the 26th ASEAN Armies Rifle Meet on November 28, 600 shooters from the association's 10 member states are now familiarizing themselves with the shooting grounds and fine-tuning their weapons in Capas, Tarlac.
Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) spokesperson Capt. Alberto Caber in an interview with the PNA Monday said the marksmen -- 60 per participating nation -- have started their controlled practice at the machine gun and pistol range shortly after the joint flag-raising headquarters at the ARMM Grandstand in Camp O'Donnell, Capas, Tarlac.
There, participants also started familiarizing themselves with the ground and shooting conditions along with fine-tuning their weapons.
The shooting area, which will be used in the Nov. 27 to Dec.7 ARMM competition is owned and maintained by TRADOC.
The competing contingents are from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
During the joint flag-raising ceremonies, Army commander Lt. Gen. Eduardo M. Año, who was the guest-of-honor and speaker, said: “To be a champion, one must have the dream and the will.
Meanwhile, TRADOC head Brig. Gen. Herminigildo Franciso C. Aquino said this international event will help improve the capabilities of the soldiers as they are exposed in an international shooting match against the best armies in Asia.
“Aside from promoting the goodwill and cooperation, the Philippine army soldiers will be able to showcase their marksmanship skills," he added.
The AARM is an annual combat shooting competition of ASEAN armies which started in 1991.
The Malaysian Army initially hosted the shooting event.
Its objective is to develop and strengthen the relationship among member Armies from its senior military leaders down to their foot soldiers.
At present, the AARM is divided into five competing events namely pistols for men, pistol for ladies, carbine, rifle, and machine gun.
