Presumptive-President Rodrigo Duterte announced on Sunday that the next Philippine National Police chief would be among three candidates.
The candidates were Chief Insp. Ramon Apolinario, officer-in-charge of the Mimaropa Region; Chief Insp. Ronald dela Rosa, the brigade commander of the Reactionary Standby Support Force (RSSF) who was relieved from his post for showing support for Duterte on his social media accounts; and Sr. Supt. Rene Aspera, the chief of staff of the PNP-Anti-Kidnapping Group.
All had served as Davao City's police chief.
Duterte added that since all three were qualified to be the next PNP chief, he told them to work it out among themselves.
"They were former city police directors of the city. Wala akong masasabi sa tenure nila dito. It was all good--Bato, si Espera, pati si Apol--Apolinario. Sabi ko 'Pag-usapan nalang ninyo,'" he said
"Magkadikit sila ng number of years of service eh. Kung mag-retire ang isa, mag-retire din ang isa because of age. Eh maghanap nalang ako ng iba," he added.
Duterte along with his executive assistant Bong Go--who also headed the search and selection committee's security and peace and order team--met with the three police commanders at the Hotel Elena.
After their meeting the presumptive president and the three candidates continued their discussions in another room.
When interviewed, none of the three police commanders gave a categorical answer as to who would be the next PNP chief. Dela Rosa, however, said that he was ready to take on Duterte's challenge to suppress crime in six months.
Meanwhile, pressed on the matter, Duterte said everyone should just wait for the final pick by the board of generals.
