Troopers from the 61st Infantry Battalion arrested a wounded bandit and recovered two firearms during an encounter in Barangay Trangka, Iloilo Wednesday afternoon.

Lt. Col. Ray Tiongson, 3rd Infantry Division spokesperson, said the firefight between lawless elements and patrolling soldiers took place 2:30 p.m. at Sitio Lambasan.

Army troops were dispatched to the area after concerned residents reported the presence of bandits.

An estimated 18 bandits opened fire on approaching government forces, triggering a 30-minute gun-battle.

Pursuing soldiers captured a wounded bandit identified as Rey Mirante, 23, and a resident of Barangay Trangka.

He sustained a gunshot wound in the back, Tiongson said.

Also recovered were a M-79 grenade launcher and munitions, a homemade shotgun, subversive documents, several backpacks and personnel belongings.

Mirante was given first aid and evacuated to the nearest hospital in Iloilo.
