The military and police commands in Eastern Mindanao signed on Thursday a Joint Action Plan 2016 that will guide them in their efforts to secure the area, particularly hotspots, during the campaign for local positions for the May elections.
The campaign period for candidates for local officials and district representatives to the House starts on March 26.
Lt. Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero, commander of the Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, made the announcement on Friday.
He said signed the agreement with his counterpart, Chief Supt. Isagani Nerez, chief of the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations-Eastern Mindanao (DIPO-EM), during a meeting at the Joint Peace and Security Coordinating Center.
"We discussed the preparations for the 2016 national elections that include risk and threat assessment dubbed SAFE 16," he said.
SAFE stands for Secure and Fair Elections.
"The joint action plan will enable both parties to have a common understanding of the actions that will be implemented for the year,” Guerrero added.
He said combined military and police troops are ready for deployment and are just awaiting orders from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
"We have special units ready for deployment to provide security to our NGCP Towers and cell sites,” he added.
NGCP stands for the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines.
Guerrero has just been promoted to three-star general, the first of the members of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Maharlika” Class 1984.
