AFP welcomes SC ruling declaring EDCA constitutional

From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 12): AFP welcomes SC ruling declaring EDCA constitutional

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Tuesday welcomes the Supreme Court (SC) decision declaring the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) as constitutional.

"The AFP welcomes the recent decision of the SC on the constitutionality of the EDCA. This decision bodes well for deepening our defense cooperation with a key ally. As part of our shared goals with the US under this agreement,we look forward to further enhancing inter-operability, addressing short-term capability gaps, promoting long term modernization of our forces, helping maintain maritime security and maritime domain awareness, and developing HADR capabilities," AFP chief-of-staff Gen. Hernando DCA Iriberri said in a message to the PNA.

He added the EDCA will help the military in improving its capacity to perform its mandate to protect the people and secure the state.

The SC on Tuesday voted 10-4-1 declaring the EDCA constitutional.

Under EDCA, US forces will be allowed access to Philippine military bases.
