Ifugao pupils get early Christmas gifts

From the Baguio Midland Courier (Dec 15): Ifugao pupils get early Christmas gifts

LAMUT, Ifugao – Military officers reached out to pupils in far-flung schools in this town.

The activity is a partnership between the 54th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army and Ifugao State University-College of Education and Arts (IFSU-CEA) Nayon as part of the Army’s “Project Shoe Box” this year.

Each shoe box, which came from individuals who responded to the Army’s call for people to share what they can to inspire elementary pupils in far flung areas, contained  assorted items either  school and hygiene supplies, slippers, stuffed toy and a letter containing the message of the donor.

Dubbed as Maagang Pamasko, Handog ng Philippine Army at IFSU,” the activity was done in different schools of Lamut District from Dec. 1 to 3.

King Jelord Ha-ong, a fatherless grade 2 pupil of the Nayon Elementary School thanked the soldiers for the gift.

Ha-ong is one of the 800 pupils from the 18 elementary schools of Lamut who benefited from the activity.

Lt. Col. Eddie M. Pilapil, 54th IB’s commanding officer, said the event is one way by which Army personnel show their care for the future generation.

“As much as possible, the Army wants to continue this kind of endeavor. We want to inspire children (to do good) in their studies for them to be better prepared for the future,” Pilapil said.

Alice Brawner, dean of IFSU-CEA, thanked the donors and principals, teachers, parents, and students of the participating schools for supporting the activity.
