Gazmin: Nothing new with US plan to deploy ships near Spratlys Island chain

From the Philippine News Agency (Oct 9): Gazmin: Nothing new with US plan to deploy ships near Spratlys Island chain

There is nothing new with a reported US plan to deploy American warships near Chinese reclaimed areas in the Spratlys Island Chain, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said Friday.

"They have always been doing that in the first place, they said that they will fly, they will sail in the areas that they have been doing before just to prove that there is freedom of navigation," he added.

Gazmin said the proposed American deployment shows US respect for rule of law.

And when asked whether the Philippines is amenable to allow these US ships to dock in our ports, the defense chief stressed that the country has been doing these "as part of our defense and security cooperation".
