A militiaman was killed while four army soldiers were
wounded as fresh fighting erupted anew in the mountains of Misamis Oriental
displacing about 40 families, village officials reported Tuesday.
Village officials in Claveria, a landlocked town in Misamis
Oriental, reported that the military and the communist New People’s Army (NPA)
encounter took place Monday afternoon in Mat-I, an outskirts village of
Claveria.
Village officials identified the lone fatality as Arnel
Taer, a militiaman assigned in Mat-I. He was reportedly killed while retrieving
the wounded army soldiers.
The military has not yet confirmed nor deny the report that
four army soldiers were wounded in the firefight that displaced more than 40
families in Mat-I.
Emily Andea, head of the province social welfare department,
has dispatched a team of social workers to attend to the needs of the 40
families who headed to the evacuation centers in the town proper of Claveria
since Monday night.
Andea said that the provincial government of Misamis
Oriental has distributed relief goods and medicines to the displaced families
who left their homes as the running gun battle between the military and the
NPAs threatened to escalate into the village.
Last August, the military and the NPAs figured in an armed
clash in the village of “Apo Sa Kahoy,” a neighboring village of Mat -I
where two NPA rebels were killed.
The armed encounter in Apo Sa Kahoy took place few weeks
after the communist rebels snatched Pfc Adonis Lupeba, of the army’s 58th
Infantry Battalion, during a siege of the village
of Alagatan in Gingoog City
last July.
Lupeba is still being held by the NPA’s custodial unit as a
prisoner of war (POW) while the military continues to launch a rescue and
retrieval operations.
