From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 31): Westmincom marks National Heroes Day by awarding medals to wounded soldiers

The Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) on Monday awarded medals to soldiers wounded in action as part of the command’s observance of National Heroes Day.

Lt. Gen. Rustico Guerrero, Westmincom chief, led the awarding of medals to the soldiers right after the flag raising ceremony at Camp Basilio Navarro that houses the headquarters of Wesmincom in this city.

The awarding of medals was done at the Camp Navarro General Hospital (CNGH), where the soldiers from the Marine Battalion Landing Team-1 (MBLT-2) are recuperating.

Awarded with Wounded Personnel Medals (WPM) are the following: Sgt. Rey Addatu; Cpl. Elmer De Jesus Jr.; Cpl. Francisco Masanda III; Cpl. Jomar Ballad; PFC Reygie Gapuz; PFC Denmark Wanasen; PFC Joseph Accad; PFC Ronwaldo Dalayday; PFC Paul Julius Calamay; and, Pvt. Dionisio Lava Jr.

They were wounded in a clash against around 300 Abu Sayyaf brigands on Friday in Mount Awak, Barangay Latih, Patikul, Sulu.

The troops were conducting focus military operation when they clashed with the Abu Sayyaf brigands around 6:29 a.m. Friday.

Guerrero said they celebrated the National Heroes Day by recognizing soldiers who were wounded in line of duty.
