From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 10): Engineer killed, 3 others wounded in NPA attack in South Cotabato

A civilian engineer was killed while three others, including two militiamen, were hurt in in a New People's Army (NPA) attack at Sitio Lamsuguing, Barangay Upper Sepaka, Surallah town, South Cotabato Thursday night.

The attack took place at 7:30 p.m. It was precluded by an improvised explosive device (IED) attack which killed Junesis Austria Miro, an engineer employed at the Gemma Construction and wounded construction worker Jerson Cordero, a resident of Sitio Datal Lawa, Barangay Upper Sepaka.

Both men were involved in the project which aims to improve farm-to-road access between Surallah and Lake Sebu towns.

The firefight between government security and an estimated 30 to 40 heavily-armed members of the NPA's Guerrilla Front 73.

Two militiamen, under the 73rd Infantry Battalion, were wounded in the clash, they were identified as Delmar Tumapang and Renato Catanos, both residents of Upper Sepaka.

The weapons of the two were seized by the NPAs.

The rebels retreated when they heard that reinforcing units were on the way.

The wounded were taken to the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital in Koronadal City for treatment.

Extortion is being eyed as the motive for the attack as the NPA is demanding three percent of the construction cost of the project in exchange for immunity.
