Rebel recruit surrenders in Davao City

From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 10): Rebel recruit surrenders in Davao City

A 17-year-old New People's Army (NPA) recruit voluntarily surrendered to troopers of the 84th Infantry Battalion last Monday after suffering severe hardships while serving the rebel band.

In a statement forwarded by Capt. Alberto Caber, Eastern Mindanao Command public affairs office chief, Wednesday, the surrenderee identified only as "Ryan," gave himself up to authorities at Malagos, Bagiuo District, Davao City at 3:30 p.m.

Upon questioning, the surrendered rebel recruit said that he finished his elementary education at Cotabato Foundation College of Science and Technology in Barangay Doroluman, Arakan town, North Cotabato.

"Ryan" also said that he was working as a garbage collector in a mall when recruited by the NPAs last year.

He added that he decided to surrender after experiencing hunger and other hardships while serving in the NPA ranks in the mountains.
