From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 17): Army, PNP hunt down gunmen in frustrated murder of soldier

Police and military authorities have launched a province-wide manhunt against two armed men who shot and wounded a soldier and a civilian in Mlang, North Cotabato Tuesday night.

Chief Inspector Bernard Tayong, North Cotabato police spokesperson, said the two men were last seen fleeing toward the borders of Maguindanao and North Cotabato following the shooting.

Elements of the 7th Infantry Battalion are helping the police in identifying and arresting the suspects believed to have acts to grind against one of its men, Corporal Pastrana Espiritu.

Espiritu, member of the 7th IB Charlie Company based in Barangay Tawan-Tawan, Mlang, North Cotabato, was in unarmed and in a drinking spree with three others inside a Degayo Videoke house along the national highway here when one of the two suspects opened fire on him, according to Tayong.

Speaking over DXND Radyo Bida, Tayong said Cpl. Espiritu was hit in his head and is now in critical condition at a government hospital after the 12:15 a.m. shooting incident.

Tayong said stray bullets also hit Lorenzo Billena, 40, of Barangay Bialong who was also a customer in the same videoke house.

He was hit in the stomach and is also recuperating at the Mlang district hospital.

"Our investigation showed the gunmen were after Espiritu since his companions were not shot at," Tayong said.

Responding elements of the Mlang police office recovered at least 10 empty shells of cal. 45 pistol.

Tayong believed the motive of the shooting was personal and the suspects thought they killed Espiritu so they hurriedly left.
