Militiaman killed in Compostela NPA attack

From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 15): Militiaman killed in Compostela NPA attack

A militiaman was killed after an undetermined number of New People's Army (NPA) fighters attacked an outpost in Barangay Banlag, Monkayo town, Compostela Tuesday night.

1st Lt. Vergel Lacambra, 10th Infantry Division spokesperson, said the attack took place at 10 p.m.

He added that rebels from the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee's Front 3 attacked the outpost, prompting government security personnel to return fire.

In the 20-minute engagement, a militiaman identified as Rene Goc-ong was killed.

The Banlag patrol base is supervised by the Army's 25th Infantry Battalion, Lacambra said.

Meanwhile, authorities said another NPA band put up a road block in the neighboring town of Montevista around the same time as the attack in Monkayo.

About 30 NPA members conducted the blockade at Kilometer 104 of the National Highway, or Davao-Butuan road, in Barangay Bankerohan Sur, Southern Mindanao regional police spokesman Superintendent Antonio Rivera said.

The rebels used a an Isuzu truck and a Starex van to block the highway, in a bid to stall reinforcing government troopers.

The blockade lasted 30 minutes after which the NPAs quickly retreated.
