As part of its routine operations, the Philippine Army in Western Visayas goes on alert for the 46th anniversary of
the New People's Army (NPA) on March 29.
"It has been a routine and it's nothing new because
even without the anniversary, the rebels are doing atrocities to the people.
However, whole year round, the Army is doing its role as guardian of the
people," said Major Ray Tiongson, head of Public Affairs Office of the 3rd
Infantry Division.
Tiongson said the 3rd ID has been intensifying its focus on
military operations in its area of responsibility to deny the NPA from their
terroristic acts against the people.
"We urge the remaining NPA members who have been misled
into lawlessness to abandon the armed violence, live a peaceful life, and join
us in bringing peace and development to the communities," he said.
Tiongson said the Bayanihan activities of the Army in the
hinterlands continues in coordination with the local government units, other
government agencies, and community stakeholders.
Latest records show that 20 NPAs in Western Visayas have
surrendered, including seven from Panay, and 13 from Negros .
Recently, 35 more former rebels in Southern Negros
Occidental also surrendered. Eleven NPA rebels killed in action during
encounters.
