President Benigno Aquino III is scheduled to lead the
necrological service for the fallen members of the Philippine National
Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City
Friday.
The memorial service coincides with the observance of the
National Day of Mourning declared by the President in remembrance for the 44
members of the police’s elite group who were killed in a clash with members of
the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last
Sunday.
Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO)
Secretary Herminio Coloma, in a statement, said that aside from the SAF
members’ family and friends, the necrological service will also be attended by
the Cabinet members and other government officials.
”The entire nation is requested to offer prayers and all
public institutions are directed to lower the Philippine flag in half-mast
tomorrow,” he said.
The policemen died during a fire fight with MILF members
while in the mid of serving arrest warrants against suspected bomb experts
Malaysian Zulkipli bin Hir, a.k.a. Marwan, and Filipino Abdul Basit Usman, who
were both linked with the terror group Jemaah Islamiya.
The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG)
dubbed the incident as a "misencounter" since there is an existing
cease fire in the area.
