Government authorities have foiled an attempt by lawless elements to bomb a passenger jeep in Lamitan City, Basilan province on Friday.

Senior Insp. Gean Gallardo, Lamitan City police chief, said this came after an improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered shortly after noon Friday aboard a passenger jeep parked at the public market.

Gallardo said the IED was placed in a basket full of vegetables. The IED contains ammonium nitrate, wirings concrete nails and a triggering device.

Gallardo said IED was safely defused by the military’s explosive ordnance demolition (EOD) team.

He said they are conducting a thorough investigation in a bid to identify the people behind the bombing attempt.

He also ordered his personnel to strengthen security around the public market.

Lamitan City serves as the trading hub of nearby towns such as Tuburan, Akbar, Mohammad Ajul and others.
