USAID vows 5-year road maintenance in Or. Mindoro

From the Manila Bulletin (Dec 25): USAID vows 5-year road maintenance in Or. Mindoro

Provincial authorities announced this week the commitment of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to finance a five-year road maintenance program for the national highway in this province, starting January, 2015.

Oriental Mindoro Governor Alfonso V. Umali Jr. said the pledge of USAID to fund the maintenance of the province’s typhoon-prone highway, which forms part of the Western Nautical Highway, was assured to him during a recent meeting of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), in which he sits as official member of the board.

He said the USAID’s commitment is important since the province has a stretch of 328 kilometers of national highway, 225 km of which were already completed by the Department of Public Works of Highways this year. Another 57 km will be constructed in 2015, he added.

Umali said aside from the said USAID-funded road maintenance project, the P250-million Puerto Galera-Abra De Ilog Road Construction Project connecting the provinces of Oriental Mindoro and Occidental Mindoro in the northern part of the island.

Early next year, the work on the completion of the P.9-billion Mindoro Circumferential Road Project will begin.
