Abducted Chinese businessman freed in Zamboanga Sibugay

From MindaNews (Nov 5): Abducted Chinese businessman freed in Zamboanga Sibugay

Basilan-based kidnappers suspected to be members of the Abu Sayyaf released early Wednesday a Chinese businessman they snatched over a month ago in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay.

Released was Li Pei Zhei, a native of Fujian, a province in the southeast coast of mainland China.

Capt. Ma. Rowena Muyuela, Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom) information officer, said Li was released by his abductors around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in the town of Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Muyuela said Li was turned over to PO1 Jimnazur Laja of Alicia town.

A group of gunmen reportedly snatched Li last September 11 in Barangay Poblacion, Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay. He was then brought to Basilan and spent time there until his abductors brought him to Alicia aboard a motorized banca last Tuesday, Muyuela said.

They reportedly departed Basilan around 5 p.m. Tuesday and arrived in Alicia at 11 p.m.

Muyuela did not mention whether or not ransom was paid in exchange for Li’s release.
