From ABS-CBN (Oct 14): No hero's welcome for peacekeepers from Liberia
There will be no hero's welcome for 115 Filipino peacekeepers in Liberia due to be repatriated next month due to the lingering Ebola virus threat in the West Africa, the military chief said Tuesday.
Armed Forces chief Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang said the tentative return of the peacekeepers is on November 10.
He said the peacekeepers will not be given a hero's welcome by the military establishment because they have to be quarantined upon their arrival to ensure that they are not infected with Ebola.
"They will have to be quarantined for 21 days, all of them. Then thereafter, we will give them a welcome party for passing the quarantine test," he said.
The Department of National Defense earlier ordered the pullout of Filipino peacekeepers in the Golan Heights and Liberia.
DND spokesperson Peter Paul Galvez said Golan Heights has been the subject of a territorial conflict between Israel and Syria while Liberia has been struggling to fight the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus.
The Philippines has been deploying troops to the Golan Heights and Liberia as part of its commitment to help the UN maintain global peace.
The defense department said there are 331 peacekeepers in the Golan Heights and 115 in Liberia.
