Army Major General Ricardo Visayas, Commander of the Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM), has mobilized air and land transportation assets to help local authorities implement the forced evacuation of residents living within the danger zones delineated by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

There is the 6-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around the volcano, and the 7-km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeastern flank.

"We are conducting forced evacuation on 60 barangays within the 5- to 8-kilometer danger zone. We have to quickly evacuate about 10,000 families today. Our 9th Infantry Division has been mobilizing all military vehicles, as well helicopters, to move the residents out of danger," Visayas said on Tuesday.

Phivolcs reported that the volcano's installed seismic network recorded 32 volcanic earthquakes and 72 rock fall events during the previous 24-hour observation period.

"Rolling incandescent rockfall within the uppermost reaches of the Bonga Gully last night indicates that the summit lava dome is breaching the crater in its southeastern side. Mayon Volcano's alert status has been raised to Alert Level 3. This means that magma is at the crater and that hazardous eruption is possible within weeks," the Phivolcs buletin said Tuesday.

Maj. Gen. Visaya said the forced evacuation was ordered by Albay Goveror Joey Salceda.

At the forefront of the mission to evacuate residents was the 901st Infantry Brigade under its commander, Col. Raul Farnacio.

Some 50 military vehicles have been deployed across all the affected barangays, with more trucks being sent to Albay from different military units.

"Communities situated at the northeast of Mayon Volcano – Sto. Domingo and Malilipot – were ordered to be prepared with damp cloth/dust masks in case of heavy ash fall," Visayas said.
