From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 21): 18 killed as BIFF, Army clash anew in Maguindanao

Eighteen people, 17 of them members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), and one Army trooper, were killed following a series of clashes as the rebels tried to overrun military outposts in Maguindanao Monday.

The installations were located at Barangay Dumablas, Datu Piang town and Barangay Ganta, Sharif Saydona Mustapha, both in Maguindanao.

Also wounded were three soldiers, said 6th Infantry Division spokesperson Col. Dickson Hermoso.

Intense fighting broke out when the brigands attacked the outpost in Sharif Saydona Mustapha town around 12: 15 a.m.

This was followed by another attack in Datu Piang an hour later.

Return fire from government soldiers stationed there killed 17 BIFF men, Hermoso said.
