From GMA News (Jul 21): 1 soldier killed, 3 wounded in BIFF ‘harrassment’ in Maguindanao

An Army soldier was killed and three others were wounded in "harassment" attacks by the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom in Datu Piang and Shariff Saydona Mustapha towns in Maguindanao early Monday morning, the Army's 6th Infantry Division said.

According to Col. Dickson Hermoso, division spokesman, the attack against members of the 61st Reconnaissance Company in Shariff Saydona Mustapha happened past midnight while an attack on the 62nd Reconnaissance Company in Datu Piang happened at around 1:15 a.m.

Hermoso said in a later text message that 17 BIFF members were killed in the clashes.

"Lima ang identified na namin," he said.

According to a "24 Oras" report aired Monday evening, a separate clash between the military and the BIFF in Datu Salibo town left 8 rebels and a soldier dead. Ten others were wounded in the attack, which the report said, the BIFF launched late Sunday night.

The fighting prompted some residents to flee the area, the report said.
