A man who goes by the name “Maharaja Omar” and claims to possess invisibility powers could not do his “magic” when enforcement personnel barged into his house at Kampung Pengkalan in Kunak yesterday morning.

It was learnt that Maharaja Omar, who also practises black magic, is trying to revive the Kiram militant group, which was responsible for the intrusion in Lahad Datu in February last year.

The “revived group” intended to pursue the Sultanate of Sulu’s claim over Sabah.

Maharaja Omar, believed to be in his 40s, was arrested with five other suspected Sulu militants, comprising his 61-year-old father; a Malaysian police corporal; two other men and a woman.

Police also seized membership cards and appointment letters of the Sulu sultanate, several documents linked to the sultanate, as well as weapons from them.

Residents in Kunak raised a false alarm, claiming curfew was imposed after seeing the heavy police presence in and around the small town in Tawau, located the east coast of Sabah.

It was learnt that police had blocked all entry and exit points to and from Kunak to prevent the six suspected terrorists from escaping, but these routes were later made accessible after the arrests were carried out.

This latest joint operation between the Bukit Aman Special Branch and Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) is a follow-up to last year’s intrusion incident.

All six suspected Sulu terrorists are being detained under Section 124(C) of the Penal Code and would be investigated under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

Apart from the special operation, Esscom also launched a seven-hour Op Gasak which started at 3am and detained 129 illegal immigrants, including 34 women, at several locations in Kunak.

In last year’s intrusion incident, a total of 10 Malaysian security personnel were killed after a group of armed terrorists intruded into Lahad Datu via Kampung Tanduo.
