4th Infantry Division observes Arbor Day

From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 25): 4th Infantry Division observes Arbor Day

In celebration of the National Arbor Day, the Cagayan De Oro-based 4th Infantry “Diamond” Division and its various line units conducted simultaneous tree planting activity at their various headquarters Wednesday morning.

Capt. Christian Uy, 4th Infantry Division spokesperson, said they were aided by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of Regions – 10 and 13, local government units, schools, civil society groups and the citizenry in this pro-environment endeavor.

Thousands of different tree species were planted in two regions.

"The objectives (of the tree planting activities) are to create awareness on the uniqueness and fragility of our ecosystem and biodiversity; to encourage the people to show concern about environmental protection and see these trees look like in the future; and improve landscape and aesthetics and adds tranquility to the surrounding areas," Uy said.

4th Infantry Division commander Major Gen. Ricardo R. Visaya said that he is hoping that this activity will bind the Filipinos to become one nation and bring back the lost glory of Mother Nature.

"Your Army is more than willing to support this kind of advocacy as we are the steward of our country’s territory and the protector of the people and environment,” he added.

Arbor Day is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees.

It has been institutionalized to be observed every June 25 throughout the nation by planting trees and ornamental plants and other forms of relevant activities.

The necessity to promote a healthier ecosystem for the people through the rehabilitation and re-greening of the environment was stressed in Proclamation No. 643.
