KUALA LUMPUR: The two police and army officers detained during a special operation in Kunak, Sabah, are related to members of the militant group in the Philippines.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Zinin said the two corporals were singled out after investigations revealed that their “movements here had assisted groups to move in and out” of Sabah waters.
“And they have family members who are from these groups across the sea.
A thorough investigation will be under way,” Mohd Bakri told reporters after attending a graduation ceremony for female constables at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) in Jalan Semarak here yesterday.
The officers were among six suspects linked to Sulu terrorists arrested by Bukit Aman Special Branch and Eastern Sabah Security Command on Wednesday.
He added that they would pick up their trail once they re-enter the country.
Bukit Aman Special Branch had announced that it had identified at least 20 Malaysians fighting in the Syrian uprising, amid reports that there may be more than 100 Malaysians in that country.
The Syrian government recently claimed that its troops had killed 15 Malaysians involved with the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (Isil), though Malaysian police had yet to confirm that.
Bukit Aman has intensified operations against militants and terrorist cells in the country, with 16 detained for suspected links to foreign terror groups so far.
