Soldier killed in NPA clash in Cotabato

From ABS-CBN (Apr 4): Soldier killed in NPA clash in Cotabato

A soldier died in an encounter with suspected New People's Army (NPA) guerrillas in North Cotabato on Thursday, an official said.

Lt. Col. Nilo Vinluan, Philippine Army's 57th Infantry Battalion commander, said a certain Corporal Molud died in an encounter between military troops and NPA rebels in Barangay Balete, Magpet town.

Vinluan said the encounter was part of military operations against NPA rebels who are still staying in the area.

"Hindi kami titigil hangga't andun pa sila. Nasa kanila ang pressure kasi wala na silang makain eh. Hindi makababa para bumili ng makakain," said Vinluan.

The military said there was no incident of violence recorded in the area during the 45th anniversary of NPA last March 29, 2013.

However, Vinluan said the the NPA's extortion activities persist in towns in North Cotabato's 2nd district.

"Umaaray na iyung mga tao sa kanila. Nagsusumbong sa amin sa mga panggigipit na ginagawa nung mga rebelde" Vinluan said.

Amid the continuing military operation against the NPA, authorities assured that the residents will be safe.
