From Malaya (Apr 2): Japan naval training squadron here for visit

The training squadron of the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) will make a goodwill visit to Manila starting today, April 2, up to April 5, the Japanese Embassy said yesterday.
 
The embassy said the training squadron from the JMSDF 13th Escort Division consists of two vessels–JS Shirane (DDH 143) and JS Asayuki (DD132) and will dock at Manila’s South Harbor during their visit.
 
The JS Shirane   is capable of making 32 knots (nautical mile) per hour. It is armed with two MK 42 127mm guns, two 20mm-Phalanx close-in weapon systems, one surface –to-air RIM 7 sea sparrow launcher, torpedoes, and anti-submarine rockets. On the other hand, the JS Asayuki   is capable of making 30 knots.
 
It is equipped with one Otobreda 76 mm gun, two 20 mm Phalanx close-in weapon system, two Harpoon surface to surface missile launchers, RIM 7 Sea Sparrow surface to air missile and anti-submarine torpedoes.
 
The ships have about 480 officers and crew members on board, including 48 newly-commissioned officers, under the command of Captain Hideto Ikeda.
