2 killed, 5 others wounded in Basilan clash

From the Philippine News Agency (Feb 8): 2 killed, 5 others wounded in Basilan clash

Two paramilitary troopers were killed while five others, including two lawless elements, were wounded following a clash in Sitio Buhi, Barangay Sukatin, Sumisip town, Basilan Saturday morning.

Capt. Jefferson Mamauag, 1st Infantry Division spokesperson, said the encounter with the lawless group of "Kotatong Balaman" took place around 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

He added that the brigands were 15 in number.

Mamauag said that troopers from the 64th Infantry Battalion were patrolling in response to reports that Balaman's group was conducting extortion and harassment operations against civilians in the area.

In the encounter that ensued, two government troopers were killed and these were identified as CAA (CAFGU Active Auxiliary) Duminta Gulinda and CVO Bejo Sampang.

Also wounded were CAA Almirin Pantao, CVO (Civilian Volunteer Organization) Omar Jadjales and CVO Oloy Malanji.

The wounded were immediately brought to Isabela City for medication.

Mamauag identified the wounded brigands as Samir Balaman and Apet Muril.

He added that the latter managed to make a clean getaway with the help of their companions.

Pursuit operations are now ongoing.
