From InterAksyon (Nov 4): Aquino leads AFP in rites to honor soldiers in Zambo siege
President Benigno Aquino III on Monday led a ceremony honoring soldiers who were killed in the three-week siege by hundreds of armed followers of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founding chairman Nurjulani “Nur” Misuari in Zamboanga City last September.
The attack killed more than 100, including innocent civilians, caused injuries to more than 200, and displaced more than 110,000 Zamboanguenos. Tens of thousands of residents remain in evacuation centers.
Misuari, his trusted lieutenant, Uztads Habier Malik, and about 160 others were charged with rebellion and for war crimes against humanity in connection with the International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
Aquino thanked Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and Armed Forces Chief of Staff Gen. Emmanuel Bautista for their successful handling of the crisis.
