Rebel amputee surrenders to 67th Infantry Battalion

From the Philippine News Agency (Oct 30): Rebel amputee surrenders to 67th Infantry Battalion

A New People's Army (NPA) leader with an amputated leg voluntarily surrendered to the troops of the 67th Infantry Battalion who were conducting routine security patrol in Baganga, Davao Oriental.

The rebel was identified as Josan A. Aquino, 29, a member of Rico Front 15, who surrendered in Barangay Salingcamot, Baganga town on Monday afternoon.

The rebel revealed that he was seriously wounded when his leg was hit during an encounter with government troops in November 2011.

His leg was cut-off by another NPA leader during the encounter, before he was sent to a hospital.

“I regret joining the NPA. I could no longer live normally just like before," Aquino said.

Aquino will receive livelihood package from the government to start a new life with his family.

Eastern Mindanao Command commander Lt. Gen. Ricardo Rainier G. Cruz III congratulated Aquino for surrendering and commended barangay officials who assisted in his safe return to the community.
