Three fire incidents break out in Zamboanga City as sporadic fighting erupts

From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 13): Three fire incidents break out in Zamboanga City as sporadic fighting erupts

Fire broke out in three separate areas here as sporadic firefight ensued between the government forces and “Misuari-faction” of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in this city.

The fire broke out one after the other shortly after noontime Friday when sporadic fighting ensued despite the declaration of “localized” ceasefire aimed at paving the way for the release of the hostages and peacefully end the standoff.

The first fire incident broke out at Martha Drive, Barangay Sta. Catalina, 1.76 kilometers east of City Hall.

It was followed by another fire at Sitio Fishpond, Barangay Rio Hondo, 0.92 kilometers east of City Hall.

The third was in the vicinity of the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Crisis Intervention Unit (DSWD-CIU) and Zamboanga City Public Safety Company (ACPSC) headquarters in Barangay Sta. Barbara, 0.35 kilometers east of this city.

Supt. Dominador Zabala, Jr., fire marshal of the Bureau of Fire Protection’s (BFP) Zamboanga City Fire District (ZCFD), said firefighters were dispatched to the scenes of the fire but were only positioned at a safe distance.

Zabala said the troops on the ground did not allow the firefighters to go near the fire scene as it would be too dangerous for them.

He said they have yet to determine the cause of the fire as well as the worth of properties that were damaged.
