From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 12): 5 soldiers hurt during encounters with rebels in Surigao Del Sur

Five soldiers were hurt, four of them due to fragments from improvised explosive device (IED), hurled by the New People's Army (NPA) rebels during an encounter in Barangay Siagao, San Miguel town, Surigao Del Sur Wednesday morning.

Fourth Infantry Division spokesperson Capt. Christian Uy said the wounded soldiers are all members of their 36th Infantry Battalion.

Uy said that these troopers were part of a group which beaten off a rebel patrol in the same area at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday which resulted in the wounding of two government troopers.

The rebels sustained an undetermined number of casualties in the firefight.

He added that these soldiers were pursuing 10 NPA fighters when an IED exploded in the former's path.

Four troopers were hurt by the fragments while the fifth was hit and wounded by gunfire.

Pursuit operations are still ongoing.
