Zambo mayor presses for military, police fusion

From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 8): Zambo mayor presses for military, police fusion

Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar has underscored the urgent need for fusion of operations by the police, military and other law enforcement units in a bid to ensure safety and security in this city both on land and on sea.

Salazar emphasized this as part of her thrust on peace and security which is the priority of her administration.

“We should not only take care of the land assets but also the territorial waters of the city and I will also be reviewing the profile of our environment,” Salazar said.

She concentrated her first week in City Hall in reviewing this city’s security plan and undertaking steps to help minimize if not eradicate shooting incidences.

She disclosed that proper coordination is being done not only with the police through Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) director Chief Supt. Juanito Vaño and Zamboanga City police officer-in-charge Senior Supt. Jose Chiquito Malayo but also with the military such as the Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom), Task Force Zamboanga, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and other law enforcement units.

“We want to ensure that there is efficient and capable police visibility and that sea and air assets are maintained,” she emphasized.

She added that every agency and sector should work together and share in the effort to maintain peace and security in this city.

Meanwhile, Salazar on Monday morning revealed that police beat patrols are now fully mobilized and the authorities have made some breakthroughs in operations made over the weekend.

On Friday night, authorities apprehended a politician from the neighboring province for violations of traffic rules and the firearms ban and on weekend a buy bust operation was also conducted in Barangay Sinunuc.

“We need to send the strong message that the City of Zamboanga is strongly enforcing the gun ban and any violator will be sanctioned as we do not accept sacred cows,” Salazar added.
