A soldier was wounded after soldiers in combat operations clashed against more than 15 New People’s Army (NPA) rebels Monday morning in Barangay Diit, Matuguinao, Samar, Capt. Amado Gutierrez, spokesman of the Army’s 8th Infantry Division, said.

Gutierrez identified he casualty as Private First Class Eduardo Carcillar, a member of the Charlie Company of the 43rd Infantry Battalion. He was airlifted to Camp Lukban Station Hospital for medical treatment.

“The encounter happened at around 7 o’clock this morning. [It] lasted for ten minutes,” he said.

He said the soldiers were conducting patrol when they chanced upon the rebels.

Meanwhile, operating troops led by 1Lt. Glen De Ramos of the 34th Infantry Battalion discovered an abandoned NPA camp at the boundary of Barangay Pio del Pilar and Barangay Can-Maria of Lapinig, Northern Samar.

“The discovered NPA camp has a makeshift hall and tents and can accommodate 30 people. Troops assessed that the NPA camp was abandoned a few days ago,” Gutierrez said.
