From InterAksyon (Jul 6): NPA ambush kills soldier in Zamboanga del Sur
A soldier was killed after New People's Army (NPA) rebels ambushed his vehicle on Friday in Purok 4, Barangay Magting, Guipos, Zamboanga del Sur, army spokesmen said on Saturday. Another soldier riding with the fatality was able to escape with some injury.
Killed was Corporal Danilo Saavedra of the 53rd Infantry Battalion.
Capt. Jefferson Somera, spokesman of the Army's 1st Infantry Division, quoted a report from the 53rd Infantry Battalion's commander:
"[Saavedra] was hit in his back by a bullet but was able to return fire before he passed away. Private First Class Rommel Taneo, who was able to jump out immediately, returned fire to the enemy. The enemy withdrew after five minutes of gun fight, sensing that government reinforcement was arriving."
The Army said the rebels were believed to be from the NPA's Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee.
