Soldier slain, 2 others injured in Compostela Valley clash

From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 4): Soldier slain, 2 others injured in Compostela Valley clash

A member of the Philippine Army’s Scout Ranger was killed while two others were wounded in an encounter with Communist rebels in the hinterlands of Mabini town in Compostela Valley on Wednesday afternoon.

But the identities of the casualties were yet to be divulged as their immediate families have to be informed first, according to Lt. Vilma Mojado of the 1001st Infantry Brigade’s Civil-Military Operation Battalion in an interview Thursday afternoon.

Mojado said that elements of the 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion were conducting a combat patrol at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sitio Darot, Barangay Libudon in Mabini when they were attacked with a landmine that triggered a firefight between more than 30 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) that lasted for an hour.

She said the encounter resulted to the death of one soldier and the wounding of two companions.

Mojado said another clash took place at sitio Kidaraan, Barangay Anipatan also in Mabini at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday.

She said elements of the 71st Infantry Battalion acted upon an information regarding the presence of rebels in the area, who reportedly harassed civilians there.

But there were no reported casualties in both sides.
